What it is about…

Presented by director N. Lingusamy, Kumki is produced by N. Subash Chandrabose and directed by Prabhu Solomon. The audio of the film was recently released by Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth and received by Suriya. The music is by D. Imman, cinematography by M. Sukumar, lyrics by Yugabharathi and art by Vairabalan. While LVK Das is the editor, the stunts are composed by Anal Arasu. Vikram Prabhu (son of actor Prabhu and grandson of Sivaji Ganesan) and Lakshmi Menon play the lead while Thambiramaiah, Junior Balaiah, Aswin and Joe Malloori comprise the supporting cast.

Music highlights

There are 10 numbers in the album, three of which are karaoke tracks — ‘Sollitaley’, ‘Ayyayoo Aananthamae’ and ‘Onnum Puriyala’, which come at the end for the benefit of those who want to sing along. Karthik (violin) and Aditi Paul mesmerise the listener with ‘A Lady and the Violin.’ ‘Yella Oorum’ sung by Benny Dayal evokes pleasant thoughts. The guitar adds a unique flavour to the number. The high-pitched humming by the music director is another highlight. ‘Onnum Puriyala,’ sung by the music director, is enjoyable, with flute interludes. ‘Ayyayoo Aananthamae’ is a solo by Haricharan, with an elaborate string section — the wonderful solo violin piece towards the end surely leaves you asking for more. ‘Sollitaley’ is another lovely song by Ranjith and Shreya Ghoshal. ‘Soi Soi’ is the only racy number in the album and sung by Magizhini Manimaaran. ‘Nee Yeppo Pulla,’ sung by Malayalam music composer Alphons Joseph, has a distinct feel.

Producer N. Subash Chandrabose: Prabhu Solomon was commissioned to do Kumki even before his Mynaa. When he told me Vikram Prabhu was going to be the hero, I was delighted; creating history by introducing thespian Sivaji Ganesan’s grandson, I thought. Seeing some portions of the film, I am convinced Vikram will go places — not only handsome, he’s also a bundle of talent.

Director Prabhu Solomon: Kumki is a musical love story shot in some exotic locations in the country. ‘Kumki’ means ‘a trained elephant’ and the hero is a mahout. Vikram and Lakshmi Menon have done a wonderful job. As it is a love story, I wanted the visuals to be shot in picturesque locations such as the Jog Falls and the Orissa border. I expect this film to be a bigger hit than Mynaa.

Hero Vikram Prabhu: I studied theatre arts at San Diego University and worked on Sarvam andAsal to gain knowledge about how the industry works. When I got a chance to play the lead in Kumki, I was very happy. My character Bomman is a mahout who takes care of a trained elephant. I must thank my director Prabhu Solomon and producer Bose for giving me a good opening in the Tamil film industry.

Music director D. Imman: Being a love story, music is a vital part of the film. I feel blessed to have worked with Prabhu, who has a unique taste in music. I was even happier because he wanted me to score only melodies. Every song is justified and related to the script. As the songs express love, it’s amazing how lyricist Yugabharathi has been able to bring out the differentiation in content.
